The four signals

8:00:00. The gun. Twenty-five thousand runners cross the start mats in fourteen minutes of corralled release, the biggest single burst of writes on the year’s calendar, and the wall’s curves all leave the floor together like startled birds. Case, seeded mid-pack by the honest 4:20 guess, reaches the line at 8:03:12, and for one particular chip the race begins there.

Four numbers matter now, and the room reads them the way the crew chief reads weather. A spike in it is the fire alarm, and “what is the error rate?” opens every incident.: the share of requests failing, the 5xx family from Act I drawn as a curve. Latency and throughput, Thursday’s pair, are the second and third. The leading indicator among the four: errors and latency say it is already bad, saturation warns it is about to be., how full each resource is, the needle-in-the-red metric. The queue depth gauge from the tour is a saturation signal, and at 8:04 it climbs, holds, and drains, which is a shock absorber doing precisely its job.

The fleet breathes

At 8:20 spectator traffic doubles, and nobody in the room touches anything. And one promise is harder than a goal. The same shape as an SLO, with money on it.. You met the export in Act I as a format. The deadline and the money make it an SLA.

9:15, the canonical peak begins. The wall is green, the fleet is fifty strong, the coffee is on its third pot. At 9:41, a phone on the long table lights up and starts moving toward the edge, buzzing.
