Two windows, open at ten
9:58 on registration morning, in two houses three states apart.
It is 9:58 on registration morning, and in two houses three states apart, two people are looking at the same race.
Molly has the Harborview website open on her laptop, on the page about the route, which she has read often enough by now to have opinions about the bridge. Case has the Traversal app open and a thumb hovering over a button that does not work yet. The window opens at ten. Neither of them is talking about it, and both of them have been awake since seven.
Everything the next two minutes will do runs on one thing, and it is worth taking these last quiet moments to name it.
The wiring
Underneath all of it is the internetConcept · lights on your mapinternetThe worldwide network infrastructure connecting computer networks: cables, routers, data centres, and the shared rules they speak. It is the wiring, and it is not the same thing as the web, which is only one system running on it. Email and video calls use the internet without being the web at all.. Cables under streets and oceans, machines that pass things along, and a set of shared rules for doing it. The internet does not know what a marathon is. It moves parcels.
The thing built on the wiring
What Molly is reading is the webConcept · lights on your mapwebOne system built on top of the internet: websites, pages, links, and web apps reached through a browser. The internet is the wiring underneath; the web is one of several things that run on it.. Pages, links, the whole readable surface of the thing. The web feels like it is the internet, and the distinction matters on exactly the days something breaks: the wiring can be fine while a website is down, and a website can be fine while your wiring is not.
The door she is reading it through is a browserConcept · lights on your mapbrowserThe application that fetches, displays, and runs web content. Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox. It reads HTML and CSS, runs JavaScript, and enforces the security rules of the web, which makes it less a window and more a small machine for running other people’s software safely.. Hers is whatever came with the laptop, and she has never once thought about it, which is the browser working as designed.
And the door that is not the web
Case’s app is the useful complication. It uses no browser and shows no pages, and at 10:00 it will still reach the same Traversal that Molly’s laptop reaches. The app rides the internet directly. Same wiring, different door, and the story of the next few scenes is what travels through it.
9:59. Case refreshes nothing, on purpose, as a matter of discipline.
