Four grams, no battery

Mile 18 of the Harborview Marathon, mid-stride.

The chip laced into Case’s left shoe weighs four grams and has no battery.

For sixteen weeks it has done nothing at all. It sat in a drawer, then in a race packet, and finally in the laces of a shoe that has carried Case eighteen miles across Harborview, along the waterfront, through the crowds on Fourth, and up the long grey rise of the bridge. Nobody has switched the chip on in all that time. Nobody could have — there is nothing inside it to switch.

Eighteen miles in, there is a mat across the road. Case notices it the way you notice a crack in the pavement, which is to say not at all; eighteen miles is enough to narrow anybody’s world down to the next three steps and the sound of their own breathing.

Then Case’s left foot comes down on the mat.

The mat throws a field, and the chip wakes inside it, borrowing just enough power from the air to say the one thing it knows: 11208. The burst lasts about as long as it would take to read that number out loud, and then the field is behind, the chip is quiet again, and Case runs on without having felt any of it.

That is all the chip does. It has said one number, once, and nothing will ask it for anything else today.

The rest happens somewhere Case cannot see, at a speed no spectator could follow, and most of it is over before that left foot lifts off the mat.

Three states away, on a couch, Molly is already looking at her phone. Any moment now, it is going to buzz.

What just happened, in the plainest terms

A physical object did something. A number went somewhere. A screen three states away changed. Those three sentences describe almost every piece of software you have ever used, and the middle one is where all the work lives.
