The app said pending, the email said yes
Two minutes in which Traversal disagreed with itself.
Lottery day. The draw runs at six in the morning, and Case is awake for no good reason at 6:04, reaching for the phone before anything else, which is a thing Case would deny doing.
The app says pending.
The email, sent at 6:02 and sitting three lines above a receipt for running socks, says congratulations, you have a place in the Harborview Marathon, your bib number is 11208.
For two minutes those two screens tell Case different things about the same fact, and both of them are being honest.
What a system remembers
The thing they disagree about is stateConcept · lights on your mapstateThe information describing what a system’s condition is right now: your cart, whether you are logged in, how far through a video you got. When engineers call something “stateful” they mean it carries memory that has to be kept correct.. Case’s entry was pending. Then the draw ran, and it became accepted. The fact changed at 6:02.
The email knew immediately. The phone did not, and went on showing what it had been told the last time it asked, which was the previous evening.
Nothing is broken here. A copy is just a thing that was true when it was made.
So which screen do you believe
This is the question, and every system of any size has to answer it in advance.

Copies live everywhere for speed and convenience, and when copies disagree, the source of truth is the one the system settles on.. The email is a copy of what that record said at 6:02. The phone screen is a copy of what it said last night. Neither copy is wrong about what it saw. Only one of them is the answer.
Case pulled down on the app to refresh it, the way everybody does, and at 6:06 the phone caught up and said accepted too.
Sixteen weeks later, on race day, a split time will go missing, and Act IV will spend a week asking the same question with rather more at stake. The answer will be the same shape. Which copy is the one we believe?
